Is My Card Fake? How to Spot Counterfeit Cards
How to Tell if a Card is Fake
Counterfeit trading cards are a real problem, especially for high-value Pokemon and Magic cards. Fakes range from obviously bad to extremely convincing. Knowing what to look for can save you a lot of money.
The Light Test
Hold the card up to a light source. Authentic cards have a black layer in the middle that blocks light. Fakes often let light through or show a different pattern.
The Rip Test (last resort)
Authentic cards have a blue middle layer visible when torn. Only do this on a card you are willing to destroy.
Feel and Thickness
Real cards have a specific stiffness and texture. Fakes are often too flimsy, too stiff or have a different surface feel.
Print Quality
Look for dot patterns under magnification. Real cards use a specific printing process. Fakes often show blurry text, off colors or incorrect fonts.
